Streaming Devices

Whether you have cancelled your cable TV subscription or want to add internet-based TV to your viewing options, you need a streaming device that fits your budget, system, and lifestyle.

As more people move away from traditional cable TV and connect their televisions to the internet, finding the best streaming device for online viewing has become a hot topic. These devices stream content from your mobile phone, tablet, or other device to your TV screen, allowing you to enjoy shows and movies on the big screen with crisp, clear images. Streaming devices vary widely in price and offer a range of features. Here are the key factors to consider before choosing one.

Streaming Devices

One of the most important decisions to make before purchasing a streaming device is which content delivery service you will use. One of the most popular systems is Amazon, which offers content from its own services—such as Amazon Prime Media, Amazon Instant Video, and Amazon Prime Music—via Amazon Fire TV and Amazon Fire TV Stick. Additionally, by installing separate apps, you can watch shows and movies from platforms like Netflix, Sling TV, PlayStation Vue, HBO Now, and Hulu Plus.

Roku offers one of the widest selections of content across its range of six streaming devices, including budget-friendly options like the Roku Express, Roku Streaming Stick, and Roku Ultra. The Roku Channel Store does not sell its own content; instead, it provides access to material from thousands of streaming providers—including Amazon Instant Video, Netflix, Sling TV, Hulu Plus, Twitch, Google, YouTube, and many others, including smaller media outlets.

The main app that does not follow this open model is iTunes. If you are an Apple user, you will need a streaming device compatible with your other iOS devices, such as the Apple TV 4K. This allows you to access content from major platforms like Netflix, Hulu, and Sling TV, as well as Apple apps like iTunes—which are often unavailable on non-Apple systems. However, you will not be able to use direct competitors to iTunes, such as Spotify.

There are other content providers, such as Android TV; while this system has a relatively small app store (via the Nvidia Shield), it offers a large number of games, including PC titles. Google also has its own multimedia app store, which includes major platforms like Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Sling TV.

Resolution

Another important aspect today is resolution. Thanks to technological advancements, it is possible to enjoy a sharper and more precise image than ever before. However, this depends not only on screen size and resolution but also on the capabilities of the streaming device itself. If you are looking for a high-end device with excellent picture quality and Dolby surround sound, the best options are the Apple TV 4K or the Nvidia Shield, both of which offer exceptional image and audio quality. The Amazon Fire TV, Roku Streaming Stick Plus, and Roku Ultra offer 4K resolution and high-definition options. The Google Chromecast Ultra is particularly notable for offering a wide range of HDR options at a relatively low price.

Controls

Another factor to consider is the controls for changing channels and searching for content. Streaming devices typically feature on-screen menu systems and dedicated remote controls that make it easy to find content without having to get up from the couch. Voice control is very practical, especially when it supports your native language, allowing you to say things like “Show me the latest episode of *Homeland*” instead of typing in the request. Amazon Fire TV and Amazon Fire TV Stick are compatible with Alexa, although only the Amazon Fire TV responds directly to voice commands. Apple TV 4K integrates the Siri voice assistant, while Nvidia Shield connects to Google Home, allowing you to control your TV viewing through that system. The Roku Ultra and Roku Streaming Stick Plus also feature voice search capabilities.

Price

Regardless of what you are buying, price will always be a factor in your decision. You can purchase highly effective streaming devices for as little as $30—such as the Roku Express and Amazon Fire TV Stick (both available for $29.99) or the Google Chromecast (usually sold for around $35). Although you won’t get extra features like voice control, HD or 4K resolution, or other perks, you will have reliable access to the same content offered by the same brands’ more expensive models.

On the other hand, high-end streaming devices cost over $100 and offer much more advanced features. The Apple TV 4K costs around $180 and includes advanced 4K resolution, the Siri voice assistant, and other benefits, while the Nvidia Shield costs $200 and offers an intense, immersive viewing and gaming experience. There are also numerous mid-range options priced between $50 and $70, such as the Roku Streaming Stick ($48.58), Google Chromecast Ultra ($69.99), and Amazon Fire TV ($49.99).

Features

All streaming devices allow you to stream content from your device to a large-screen TV. However, if you are unsure which model to choose, there are some additional features that—while not mandatory—are very useful. High-speed streaming is a great feature, particularly for gamers who want to avoid interruptions. The Nvidia Shield offers high-speed connectivity, meaning your own reflexes will be the only factor limiting your performance.

Amazon Fire TV stands out by offering a web browser directly on the TV screen, effectively turning it into an extended version of a desktop computer. If you have an older TV without an HDMI port, you will appreciate the traditional AV cable included with the Roku Express, making it the only streaming device compatible with this type of screen.

The Roku Ultra boasts numerous features, including a wired Ethernet connection for faster download speeds, a microSD card slot for easy photo viewing, a headphone jack on the remote, and a button to locate the remote if it gets lost. It also features a smart “Night Listening” mode that continuously adjusts the volume to avoid disturbing others.
